The Metal Crowd follows a similar crowdfunding process as other platforms. Interested donors can browse through active campaigns to choose one they want to support. The bands specify how they wish to receive donations, a specific or flexible amount, or they allow the direct purchase of special rewards. In return, donors receive a digital donation receipt. In case the campaign fails, the donation is refunded in full. If the campaign succeeds and the artists finish their recording, donors can access rewards and a share of potential revenue by using their receipts.

Donors are advised not to see their donation as an investment because revenue cannot be guaranteed. Yet, unlike other platforms, the donated money may be (partially) recovered. If the music supported is successful, donors might earn back part or all of their money, or even earn a profit.
